Dubai and UAE eSIM from India: prices, roaming packs and what actually works on arrival

Dubai is a two-hour hop for a lot of Indian families, a layover for many more, and the place where roaming bills surprise people most, because the trip is short and nobody plans the phone. This guide puts the real numbers side by side — our UAE eSIM plans, the telco roaming packs you are offered by SMS on landing, and Airalo — with the date each was checked.

What a UAE eSIM costs from AirZippy

UAE plans are priced higher than South-East Asian ones everywhere in the industry, because wholesale data in the Emirates costs more. Ours are data-only with hotspot, work across all seven emirates, and start counting only when the eSIM first connects in the UAE.

Notice that 3 GB for 7 days costs exactly the same as 3 GB for 3 days. Unless the trip is a single overnight, buy the seven-day plan.

Roaming packs versus an eSIM, in rupees

Indian operators sell international roaming packs for the Gulf, and they are the default for anyone who has not planned ahead. TelecomTalk compared the packs on 1 August 2026; the figures below are quoted from that article.

The fair comparison is not "eSIM beats roaming" in every case. The telco packs include voice minutes on your own number, which an eSIM does not. If you must receive ordinary phone calls on your Indian number for a week, a roaming pack does that and an eSIM cannot. If WhatsApp calls are enough — and for most family trips they are — the eSIM gives the same 3 GB for less than half the price, and 10 GB for a month at ₹1,749 against Airtel's ₹2,998.

The setting that stops people connecting at DXB

The UAE networks are quick to register a visitor eSIM, so when a traveller messages us from the arrivals hall saying "no internet", it is almost never coverage. In order of how often we see it:

1. Data Roaming is off on the eSIM line. Every travel eSIM is technically roaming. iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → the UAE line → Data Roaming on. Android: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Data roaming on.
2. The Indian SIM is still the data line. iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → Mobile Data → choose the UAE line. Android: SIM manager → Mobile data → choose the eSIM.
3. Wi-Fi Assist or the airport Wi-Fi is holding the phone. Turn Wi-Fi off for a minute and watch the signal bars on the eSIM line.
4. The APN was not applied. Rare, mostly older Android. The value is in the delivery message.
5. Low Data Mode or a VPN. Both can look like "no internet" on a fresh line.

If you have done all five, reply on the WhatsApp chat you ordered from. A person can see whether the eSIM has registered on the network and, if it never did, refund the order.

VoIP in the UAE — what works

The UAE restricts some voice-over-internet services. Practical experience from our customers: WhatsApp messaging works normally; WhatsApp and FaceTime calls are inconsistent and often do not connect on any SIM, local or foreign. Google Meet, Zoom and Microsoft Teams, which businesses in the UAE use daily, work. Plan family calls around that rather than expecting WhatsApp calling to behave as it does in India.

Choosing the plan

Layover or a two-night stop: 3 GB for 7 days (₹699). It costs the same as the three-day version and covers a delay.

A family week: one 10 GB, 15-day plan (₹1,649) on the parent's phone with hotspot on, rather than four 3 GB plans.

Working from Dubai for a month: 20 GB for 30 days (₹3,149). If video meetings fill the day, look at the 30 GB or 50 GB sizes on the UAE page; per-gigabyte pricing keeps falling as the plan grows.

Installing before departure

The QR arrives on WhatsApp and email within minutes of paying. Install on Wi-Fi at home; nothing starts until the eSIM connects in the UAE.

iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM → Use QR Code → scan. Keep the Indian SIM as the default line for calls. After landing: Data Roaming on, Mobile Data set to the UAE line.

Android: Settings → Connections (or Network & internet) → SIM manager → Add eSIM → scan. Keep the Indian SIM on for calls and WhatsApp; select the eSIM for mobile data. After landing: Data roaming on.

FAQ

Does the eSIM give me a UAE phone number?

No. AirZippy plans are data-only. Your Indian number stays on your Indian SIM; WhatsApp keeps working on it over the eSIM's data.

Can I use the plan in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah as well as Dubai?

Yes. The plan covers the whole country, all seven emirates.

Will WhatsApp calls work?

Messaging works normally. WhatsApp voice and video calls are restricted in the UAE and often fail on any SIM; Zoom, Teams and Google Meet work.

Is a UAE eSIM cheaper than the Jio or Airtel roaming pack?

For data, yes, on the figures above: 3 GB for ₹699 against ₹1,198–₹1,598 for the packs. The packs include voice minutes on your own number, which an eSIM does not; if you need ordinary calls, weigh that.

How fast is the QR delivered?

Within minutes of payment, on WhatsApp and email, on our regular numbers and plans. If anything holds it up, a person picks up the same chat.
