Pilgrimage travel is different from a holiday in the ways that matter for a phone. The traveller is often older, is often part of a group led by a tour operator, may not be the person who set the phone up, and needs the connection for a few specific jobs: staying reachable by the family in India, finding the group at Masjid al-Haram, prayer-time and Nusuk app notifications, and the occasional map to a hotel in Aziziyah. This guide is written for the son or daughter setting the phone up before departure as much as for the pilgrim.

How much data does Umrah or Hajj need?

Less than most people buy, unless video calls home are daily. A realistic pattern for a two-week Umrah: WhatsApp messages and voice notes through the day, a video call home most evenings, Google Maps between the hotel and the Haram, occasional YouTube in the evening. That sits comfortably inside 5 GB for two weeks for a light user and 10 GB for someone who video-calls every day. For Hajj's longer stay and the days at Mina and Arafat, where photos and calls cluster, 10 to 20 GB over 30 days is the sensible range.

Two tips that reduce data more than any plan choice: download the offline map of Makkah and Madinah in Google Maps while still on hotel Wi-Fi, and set WhatsApp to not auto-download videos in groups (Settings → Storage and data). Tour-group WhatsApp groups are where most of a pilgrim's data disappears.

Setting up a parent's phone before they fly

This is the part that goes wrong most often, so here it is step by step. Do it a day or two before departure, on home Wi-Fi, with the pilgrim's phone in your hands.

1. Check the phone can take an eSIM. Dial *#06#. If an EID appears, it can. iPhone XS/XR and newer sold in India, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, and most 2022-onward OnePlus, Motorola and Nothing phones qualify. Older or carrier-locked phones cannot; in that case a physical Saudi SIM at the airport is the fallback.
2. Order the plan from the pilgrim's own WhatsApp number if you can, so the QR and any later help land on the phone that travels. If you order from your number, forward the QR message to theirs — or scan it with their camera directly from your screen.
3. Install it. iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. Label the line "Saudi".
4. Set the defaults now, not at Jeddah airport. iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → Mobile Data → choose the Saudi line; open the Saudi line and turn Data Roaming on. Android: SIM manager → Mobile data → the eSIM; Mobile networks → Data roaming on for it. Leave the Indian SIM enabled for calls and for WhatsApp's verification SMS.
5. Turn on Low Power Mode restrictions off — on iPhone, Low Data Mode under the Saudi line should be off, or WhatsApp media will stall.
6. Write the two things down on a note in the phone's case: "Data Roaming ON" and the AirZippy WhatsApp number. Any group leader can then help.

The plan will not use a byte until the phone reaches Saudi Arabia, so all of this costs nothing to do early.

Calls home: what to expect

An eSIM is data-only. WhatsApp calls work well on Saudi networks and cost nothing beyond data. Ordinary calls to the pilgrim's Indian number arrive only if the Indian SIM has international roaming switched on — receiving calls while roaming is charged by the Indian operator at their roaming rate — so most families agree on WhatsApp calls and keep the Indian SIM purely for verification SMS. If relatives insist on dialling the Indian number, the Jio or Airtel Gulf pack with voice minutes is the honest recommendation, with the eSIM alongside for data.

Does the eSIM work in Makkah, Madinah, Mina and Arafat?

Yes. The plan covers the whole of Saudi Arabia on the national networks; capacity at Mina during Hajj peaks is a network matter that affects every SIM equally.

Can an older person install this?

The installation is a QR scan, but the two settings afterwards — Data Roaming on and the eSIM as the data line — are where help is needed. Do them before departure as described above and nothing needs touching on arrival.

Does it include a Saudi phone number?

No. It is data only. WhatsApp keeps working on the Indian number.

When does the validity begin?

When the eSIM first connects to a Saudi network. Install it a week early if that is convenient.

What if the phone shows no internet after landing?

Check Data Roaming on the Saudi line and that it is the Mobile Data line. Then reply on the WhatsApp chat the QR came from; a person will check the line and, if it never connected, refund.
