A travel eSIM is a second, data-only line installed on the same phone. It uses a foreign network directly, so data is priced like a local plan. It has no phone number; WhatsApp keeps working on your Indian number over its data. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone for verification SMS and, if you enable roaming on it, for calls.

Both together is the setup most frequent travellers end up with: the eSIM carries all the data, and the Indian SIM is left on with roaming enabled but no pack, so an incoming call rings (charged per minute by the operator if answered) while everything else costs nothing.

The prices, with dates

Two things the table shows plainly. On data alone the eSIM is cheaper in every row we can pair up — 10 GB in Japan or Thailand for under ₹1,000 against ₹2,998 for Airtel's 30-day 10 GB pack. And the packs are not useless: 200 or 300 voice minutes on your own number is something an eSIM simply cannot offer. When the roaming pack is the right buy

Be honest about these, because they are common:

• You must take ordinary calls on your Indian number — a business number that clients dial, an elderly parent who will not use WhatsApp, a bank that calls to verify. The pack's voice minutes are the only clean answer.
• Your phone has no eSIM support. Many phones sold before 2022, and some current budget models, cannot hold an eSIM. Dial *#06#; no EID line means no eSIM.
• The trip is a day or two and you will barely use data. The convenience of one tap on an SMS can outweigh a few hundred rupees.

When the eSIM is the right buy

• Data is what you use — maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, email, video calls. That is most leisure travellers.
• The trip is a week or longer, where the per-GB gap between pack and eSIM turns into thousands of rupees.
