eSIM for seafarers: staying connected across ports, sign-on flights and the trip home

AirZippy started inside a company that serves merchant-navy crew, so this is the guide we wanted to exist when the first cadet asked us "which SIM for my contract?". The honest answer has three parts: what an eSIM can do for a seafarer, what it cannot, and how to buy the right thing for a rotation instead of guessing at each port.

What an eSIM can and cannot do at sea

An eSIM is a mobile-network subscription. It works where there is a terrestrial mobile network: in port, at anchorage within a few kilometres of the coast, on coastal passages, and on the flights and layovers either side of the contract. It does not work mid-ocean. Nothing in a phone does, apart from the ship's own satellite service, which the company provides and rations. A seafarer eSIM therefore earns its keep in port calls and on the sign-on and sign-off journey, not on the crossing.

That changes what to buy. A contract might touch Singapore, Port Klang, Colombo and Jebel Ali over four months, with a day or two in each. Buying a fresh country plan at each port from a kiosk means walking off the ship to find one, paying tourist prices, and doing it again next port. Buying one regional plan that covers the whole rotation, valid for 30 days at a time, means the phone simply works whenever the coast comes into range.

The plans that suit a rotation

Pricing a real rotation with the trip builder

You do not have to work the bundles out by hand. The trip builder takes a route in one line — "Singapore 3 days, Port Klang 2, Colombo 2, Jebel Ali 4" — and returns the cheapest set of plans that covers every stop, comparing one bundle against separate country plans. The WhatsApp assistant does the same if you send it the ports; reply with the code it gives and the payment link arrives in the chat.

A worked example from the catalogue on 23 September 2026: a Singapore–Malaysia–Thailand rotation with about two days in each port over a month. Three country plans at 5 GB for 30 days come to ₹499 + ₹449 + ₹649, giving 15 GB in total but each 5 GB locked to one country. One Asia 12 plan at 10 GB for 30 days costs ₹999 and the whole 10 GB is usable in whichever port you are in. For most crew the bundle wins, because port time is unevenly spread and a country plan you bought for Thailand is worthless if the ship skips the call.

Sign-on and sign-off: the flights are where it matters most

The journey to join a ship is the stretch when a seafarer most needs a phone that works: agent's messages about a changed pickup, the hotel in a port city, the family wanting to know the flight landed. Two habits make that painless.

Install the plan before leaving India, on Wi-Fi. The QR arrives on WhatsApp and email within minutes of payment. Add it, label it "Ship", keep the Indian SIM as the default for calls, and set Data Roaming on for the new line. Nothing starts until it connects abroad.

Buy for the joining leg first, not the whole contract. A 30-day bundle covers the sign-on flight, the first ports, and can be topped up from the same WhatsApp chat before it expires. Buying a four-month supply on day one only means paying for days the ship spends at sea.

Keeping the Indian number alive

A long contract is when Indian SIMs get deactivated for non-use. Keep the Indian SIM in the phone, keep it enabled, and let it register whenever the ship is in port — that counts as activity with most operators, though each has its own rule and it is worth confirming yours before a long contract. WhatsApp stays tied to the Indian number and works over the eSIM's data, so the family sees the same number all contract long.

Ordering from the ship

When the ship's satellite Wi-Fi allows WhatsApp, the whole purchase works over it: send the ports and the days, reply with the code, pay by UPI or card on the link, and the QR arrives in the same chat. It can be installed on the ship's Wi-Fi and will activate at the next port. If the Wi-Fi allows only text, send the ports and a person will reply with the options as plain text.

FAQ

Does an eSIM work at sea?

Only within mobile range of a coast, typically a few kilometres out, and in port and at anchorage. Mid-ocean connectivity is the ship's satellite service; no phone SIM changes that.

Which bundle for a Far East container run?

Asia 12 for Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan and South Korea calls. If the run also touches Europe, Asia + EU 54 covers both on one eSIM.

Can I top up without a new QR?

Yes. Reply on the WhatsApp chat before the plan runs out; a top-up adds data to the same eSIM.

Will my Indian SIM stop working?

Not because of the eSIM. Keep it enabled so it registers in ports, and check your operator's inactivity rule for contracts longer than 90 days.

Is there a plan for the whole contract?

Bundles run 30 days at a time and can be topped up. That is deliberate — it stops you paying for the weeks the ship is out of range.
